About Nine Gadgets

We order everything.
Usually more than once.

The first one arriving in good condition tells you almost nothing. It's the second and the third — from different batches, sometimes different suppliers — that tell you whether a thing is actually made well or whether you just got lucky.

001 — How a gadget gets on this page

Four ways to not make it.

It only works new.

Plenty of things are fine for a fortnight. We keep them longer than that on purpose, because the failure we care about is the slow one — the hinge that loosens, the battery that stops holding.

It's inconsistent.

We order the same product more than once. If unit two doesn't match unit one, it doesn't go up, however good unit one was. You're not buying our sample, you're buying a random one.

It needs explaining.

If we have to read the manual twice, so will whoever you give it to. Eight-in-one anything usually fails here.

It photographs better than it is.

The most common one. If it looks good in a render and ordinary in your hand, that gap is the whole problem with buying gadgets online, and we're not going to add to it.

002 — Why nine

Nine is what we can stand behind.

A shop with ten thousand products has made no decisions. That's the deal it offers you: here is everything, you work it out. We'd rather make the decisions and be wrong in public than list a warehouse and call it choice.

Nine is not a marketing number. It's how many things we currently own, use, and would buy again. When something better turns up, something comes off — the list is supposed to move.

003 — What we tell you

Including the bad part.

Every product on this site says who should skip it. Not as false modesty — because a recommendation that excludes nobody isn't a recommendation, it's an advert. If the projector needs a dark room, that's on the page. If the lock needs drilling and you rent, that's on the page.

Free shipping on everything, thirty days to send it back, and if we recommended something that let you down, that's our mistake to fix rather than yours to argue about.

Nine we stand behind. And the rest of the shelf.
